NextGenEn, Inc., an early stage “cleantech” startup headquartered in Columbia, S.C., is engaged in research and development in the areas of materials, mechanics, durability, systems, controls, fabrication and manufacturing of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) and related technologies in order to develop and commercialize SOFC-based products.

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are energy conversion systems, which convert chemical to electrical energy directly. In essence fuel cells (SOFCs included) are similar to batteries except that where batteries run down and become depleted; fuel cells are continually replenished with fuel and are able to provide a continuous supply of electric power.  Fuel cells run virtually silent, offer independent scaling between power and capacity (unlike batteries), and have very low levels to no emissions.

One of the major advantages of SOFC over other fuel cell technologies is their fuel flexibility, as they are able to handle a wide variety of fuels which will be critical in achieving significant commercial adoption.  Another advantage is SOFCs are the most electrically efficient, which means that of the electricity created less is lost as compared to the other fuel cell technologies.
